If you’re a financially contributing member of our society, you have most likely subsidized abortions.
This fact upsets the majority of Americans, who report in a 2026 Knights of Columbus/Marist poll that they oppose taxpayer-funded abortion both at home (54%) and internationally (approximately 70%). Yet, a new report issued by the Government Office of Accountability (GOA) has found that through the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), more than four million Americans have health insurance plans that include induced abortion coverage in 2026.
The bombshell GAO report was requested by the Senate Values Action Team, led by chairman Senator James Lankford (R-OK). Their letter to the comptroller explained that constituents were unable to obtain basic information on the coverage of induced abortion through qualified health plans offered via Obamacare. In 2014, a similar inquiry had been filed, and Congress now wanted updated information.
The following exposé showed that 1,719 of the 6,655 nationwide Obamacare plans cover induced abortions in 2026. That’s approximately 26%, meaning more than one in four of these plans help pay to kill preborn children in America. There has also been an increase of Obamacare abortion coverage since the 2014 report, with 683 more plans covering induced abortion in 2026.
After the report’s release, Sen. Lankford issued a press statement, saying:
“As suspected, we now know that millions of Americans are forced each year to pay for elective abortion coverage that they do not want or agree with. The GAO findings confirm concerns we have raised for years about Obamacare and the Hyde Amendment. The accounting gimmick used in Obamacare does not protect Americans who have a moral objection to paying for the taking of a child’s life through elective abortion.”
(The “accounting gimmick” is a financial segregation mechanism which ignores money’s fungibility. As required by Section 1303 of the ACA, insurers must charge $1 per member per month for induced abortions and keep these fees in a separate bank account, through which induced abortion claims are exclusively paid. Learn more about this rule here.)
The Hyde Amendment, a legislative “rider” that has been attached to federal appropriations bills annually since 1977, has long protected Americans from directly paying for most induced abortions through federal taxes. However, the Hyde-style protections governing Obamacare continue to be weakly enforced at best – a problem once again under Congressional scrutiny.
AAPLOG firmly opposes the use of tax dollars being spent on induced abortion. Just as physicians should never be forced to violate their consciences by participating in induced abortions, American taxpayers must also be protected from violating their consciences by financially subsidizing the commission of induced abortion.
