Will Planned Parenthood Finally Be Defunded?

Last year, the pro-life movement achieved one of its most significant victories since the overturning of Roe v. Wade: the federal defunding of Planned Parenthood through the One Big Beautiful Bill.

While this was a massive accomplishment that once felt out of reach, a couple of key factors ultimately limited its impact.

First, the Senate Parliamentarian reduced the defunding period from a proposed 10 years to just one. As a result, Planned Parenthood has been positioned to regain federal funding within a year, meaning the current defunding is set to expire on July 4.

Second, Planned Parenthood’s legal challenges further weakened the effort, shortening what was already a limited defunding window into just a matter of months.

None of this diminishes the significance of the original victory; the impact was felt by America’s abortion giant. Planned Parenthood reportedly entered a period of financial strain, even exploring alternative revenue streams such as plastic surgery services to offset losses.

But while the win was meaningful, it also highlighted the work that remains.

In 2025, Congressional Republicans played a central role in securing the defunding provision in the federal budget. While there is still desire to extend Planned Parenthood’s defunding, the feasibility of achieving this success again in 2026 is narrow given the slimmer margin of House Republicans. However, this does not mean Congressional Republicans, AAPLOG Action, or the pro-life movement give up on pushing for an extension of defunding efforts.

John Gerardi, executive director of Right to Life of Central California, underscored this challenge in a May op-ed for National Review, writing

“An amendment proposed by Senator Josh Hawley to include defunding abortion providers as part of legislation to fund the Department of Homeland Security failed to pass.”

Sen. Josh Hawley has been a consistent ally to the pro-life movement, recently introducing legislation aimed at restricting the abortion pill and pursuing investigations into manufacturers such as GenBioPro and Danco.

With July 4 quickly approaching, time is limited. However, lawmakers still have an opportunity to revisit this issue and pursue a continued defunding solution. As this deadline approaches, the question remains: will this moment be seized, or will it pass?  We will keep you posted! But you can let your Members of Congress know you support the continued defunding of Planned Parenthood – find your U.S. Senators and Representative here and contact their offices.
